Do you have dense breast tissue?
What you need to know about automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) and why?
Technology has significantly improved breast health over the years including the recent introduction of Digital 3-D Mammography (TOMO). However, even the newest 3-D MAMM technology has a very difficult time detecting cancer in women who present with dense breast tissue.
Do You Know:
- 40% of the female population in the United States have dense breast tissue (our patient base here at OB-GYN Associates, P.C. is closer to 60%) Women with extremely dense breast tissue have a 4-6 times greater risk of developing breast cancer
- Studies have shown a 55% relative increase in invasive cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue when Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) is used in conjunction with Full Field Digital Mammography
- The ABUS exam takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, is relatively painless and can be completed the same day you have your mammogram or scheduled at your convenience We introduced ABUS in January 2018 and in the first four months two cancers were detected that the normal mammogram did not pick up and two pre-cancers were found that went undetected in the mammogram.
