Birth Control

Birth control is personal and can be confusing. At OB-GYN Associates in Cedar Rapids, we’ll make sure you find a birth control option that fits your lifestyle and your needs. In addition to condoms, the pill and tubal ligation, there are several other methods available. Some of our in-house procedures include:

Essure

Essure Birth Control is a soft, flexible micro-insert that prevents pregnancy by creating a permanent tissue barrier in each fallopian tube. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for a trained doctor to insert the coil through your body’s natural pathways (vagina, cervix, and uterus) and into your fallopian tubes. In 3 months the doctor will perform a test to verify that the tissue barrier is completely formed and that your protection is permanent.

Nexplanon

Nexplanon is a small, soft, and flexible rod the size of a matchstick that is put under the skin of your upper arm and lasts up to 3 years. The hormonal contraceptive stops the release of an egg from your ovaries and prevents sperm from reaching the egg.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

An intrauterine device is a small T-shaped plastic device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. A small string tied to the end of the IUD hangs down into the upper part of the vagina. IUDs work by changing the lining of the uterus and fallopian tubes, affecting the movements of eggs and sperm so fertilization does not occur. IUDs can last from 1 to 10 years.
