Tips from our practitioners for a healthy pregnancy
Congratulations! You’re pregnant – now what? Pregnancy is a time filled with excitement and joy. But it can also be filled with uncertainty. Is it ok for me to eat this? What was that feeling? Is that normal?
Here at OB-GYN Associates we know how important it is to have a healthy pregnancy. We’ve put together some tips on how to stay healthy during your nine-month journey.
Get lots of sleep
Feeling tired? Many women find they are particularly exhausted during the first trimester. That’s because there is a big increase of hormones in your body that take up a lot of energy. Make sure to get eight hours of sleep every night with a short nap during the day. Also, avoid eating large meals three hours before bedtime. Getting some mild exercise, like walking, can also help you feel better.
Get good prenatal care
Seeing a doctor as soon as you’re pregnant is vital to your health and your baby’s health. That way we can track your baby’s growth and development while making sure that you’re staying healthy. You should see your doctor about ten times during your pregnancy.
Eat lots of nutrients
Eating healthy is always important, but especially while you’re pregnant. Make sure you’re eating foods with lots of nutrients that will help your baby grow and develop. We recommend lots of lean meats, fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and low-fat dairy products. You will also need to increase your daily calorie intake by about 300 calories a day, especially later in your pregnancy as your baby grows quicker.
Slow down
During the third trimester of your pregnancy you’ll probably still get around quite well. Nevertheless, your expanding belly may mean that your view of the ground is obstructed. Take your time and make sure you keep your balance.
Prepare yourself for the birth
As your due date approaches, it’s time to prepare yourself for the birth. Take childbirth preparation classes to prepare yourself for what to expect during labor and delivery. You’ll also learn how to breathe during contractions.
