Birth control options

At OB-GYN Associates, we want to make sure that you find a birth control option that fits your lifestyle and needs. In additon to condoms, the pill and tubal litigation there are many other methods available. Some of our in-house procedures include:

Essure

Essure is a soft, flexible micro-insert that prevents pregnancy by creating a permanent tissue barrier in each fallopian tube. It takes about 15-20 minutes for a trained doctor to insert the coil through your body’s natural pathways (vagina, cervix and uterus) and into your fallopian tubes. Essure lasts more than 3 months.

Implanon

Implanon is a flexible plastic rod the size of a matchstick that is put under the skin of your arm and lasts up to 3 years. The hormonal contraceptive stops the release of an egg from your ovary and also changes the mucus in your cervix, which may keep sperm from reaching the egg.

Intrauterine device (IUD)

An intrauterine device is a small T-shaped plastic device that is inserted and left inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. A small string tied to the end of the IUD hangs down into the upper part of the vagina. IUDs work by changing the lining of the uterus and fallopian tubes affecting the movements of eggs and sperm so fertilization does not occur. IUDs can last from 1 to 10 years.
